Colorectal Cancer Risk Increased by Processed Meat

The new health report by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) finds that the risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by eating whole grains daily, such as whole-wheat bread or brown rice. The amazing thing about this is that the more you eat the lower the risk of colorectal cancer. And this is for the very first time that WCRF/AICR research links whole grains self-sufficiently to lower the risk of cancer.

And the risk of colorectal cancer is increased by taking processed meat, such as hot dogs, bacon and other processed meats. And the strong confirmation which is found and it also protects against colon cancer and that is physical activity.

Edward L. Giovannucci, MD, ScD, who is the lead author of the report and professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health said: “Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet this report demonstrates there is a lot of people can do to dramatically lower their risk. The findings from this comprehensive report are robust and clear: Diet and lifestyle have a major role in colorectal cancer.”

The new report shows and assessed the scientific research worldwide on how diet, weight, and physical activity affect colorectal cancer risk. This report studied 99 studies, counting data on 29 million people, of whom over a quarter of a million were detected with colorectal cancer. The other reasons which increase the risk of colorectal cancer include:

  • Increased weight or obese
  • Taking two or more daily alcoholic drinks, such as wine or beer
  • Taking more amounts of red meat( above 500 grams cooked weight a week), such as pork or beef

And the risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by taking fiber, whole grains and physical activity. This report concluded that eating approximately three servings means 90 grams of the whole grains, daily lower down the risk of colorectal cancer by 17 percent.
