New Study Says the World has Made More than 9 Million Tons of Plastic

A new study says that since the 1950s, more than 9 million tons of plastic have been made and the massive majority of it has been thrown in the trash.

Well, according to the paper, it says this is the very first effort to measure the total amount of plastic produced since the start of mass plastic production in the middle of the 20th century.

The team of researchers who research over the mass plastic production is from the University of California, the University of Georgia, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. These researchers say the plastic materials such as Bakelite were used in the early 20th century, but the popularity of this material began to rise after the World War II, making it one of the most commonly used man-made materials.

The amount of this plastic is now used in 30 percent of all the plastic ever produced, this finding is estimated by the researchers.

This is mostly used because of its benefits such as lower-cost materials, capabilities like water resistance. The other side of the picture is the trash produced by our love for the plastic use. The plastic produced over 7 billion tons of trash, by their estimate.

In the year 2015, the recycled amount of the plastic is only 9 percent and another 12 percent was cremated, these findings are found by the researchers in this report. And if we see the other 79 percent of it, it has built up in landfills or ended up in the environment.

On Wednesday, the team published their results in the journal Science Advances. Disposal data came from the sources such as the PlasticsEurope, the World Bank, the China Statistical Yearbook, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The three researchers of this study were also the part of the team that estimated in the year 2015 that between 5 million and 13 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. The team of this new study said that in every major ocean basin of the world plastics are found.
